Digital Darkroom: Creating the Decay Recipe

In my Decay photo series, I tried to capture the sinking hopeless weight I get in the pit of my stomach sometimes that is simultaneously alluring and revolting. My compositions emphasized bone chilling blues and ominous dark shadows. I stressed glaring harsh light and rough abrasive textures. Follow these steps to create the same effects in your photos.

You will need this software

To create the decay recipe

  1. Open a photo in Photoshop. Open the Color Efex Pro plug-in.
  2. Open the Pro Contrast filter. Choose 01 – Neutral.
  3. On the right side, adjust the sliders as necessary and click + Add Filter.
  4. Click Back in the Filterlist. Open the Detail Extractor filter. Choose 02 – Strong Large Details.
  5. Adjust sliders and click + Add Filter.
  6. Click Back in the Filterlist. Open the Beach Bypass filter. Choose 03 – Strong.
  7. Adjust sliders and click + Add Filter.
  8. Click Back in the Filterlist. Open the Film Efex: Vintage filter. Cick 07 – Saturated Fade.
  9. Click Save Recipe and OK to return to Photoshop.
